Research Lines

INCT-TA researchers are involved in studies in Aquatic Toxicology focused on the application of classical biomarkers and the development and application of new biomarkers as valuable tools in the definition of public politics regarding conservation of freshwater and marine coastal ecosystems. These studies are grouped in research interestes established according to the potentialities of the research groups associated to INCT-TA. These research lines are listed below:

  • 1)Chemical analysis of freshwater and seawater: this research line is focused on the development and application of modern analytical methods to detect and quantify the different types of aquatic contaminants studied, aiming to characterize the experimental conditions adopted.

  • 2)Toxicity tests in aquatic animals: this research line aims to develop and apply modern technologies to perform toxicity tests and select bioindicators of toxicity of aquatic contaminants.

  • 3)Biomarkers: this research line is devoted to apply classical biomarkers and develop new morphological, biochemical, physiological, immunological, genetic and behavioral biomarkers of aquatic contamination in the bioindicators selected, aiming to support the establishment of public politics regarding the evaluation of water resources quality and aquatic life preservation.

  • 4)Modeling and environmental regulation: this research line is focused on the development and application of modern methods of integrated analysis and chemical and toxicological modeling based on the bulk of data generated by INCT-TA researchers, aiming the elaboration of a proposal of public politics considering the responses of the studied biomarkers as a scientific basis for making-decisions in the regulation of contaminant emission in water bodies.
