Research activities
Regarding the research activities in the scope of the INCT-TA, all goals originally established for 2009-2010 were achieved, as described below. Scientific publications generated from studies involving the INCT-TA researchers are listed below.
1. Testing, standardization and inter-calibration of protocols for chemical and biological analyses:
It was established protocols for chemical analyses of the experimental media employed in the research developed by all INCT-TA partners. Furthermore, protocols for analyses of morphological, physiological, biochemical, genetic, immunological and behavioral biomarkers in animal experimental models (freshwater and coastal species) were established, standardized and inter-calibrated. A book containing these protocols is being produced and will be launched in August 2011.
2. Generation of a toxicology databank:
A literature search of toxicological data available for Brazilian native species was performed. Data obtained were evaluated, selected and incorporated into a toxicology databank, which is actually available at this website. A scientific review paper entitled "Toxicity tests aiming to protect Brazilian aquatic species: current status and implications for management" was also prepared from the literature searched. This review paper critically considers the toxicological tests performed up to now in Brazil using native species. It points the needs for future research with aquatic species from selected environments. This review paper was recently submitted to the Integrated Environmental Assessment and Management journal.
3. Selection of biomarkers of aquatic contamination based on toxicological tests in laboratory:
In laboratory, preliminary toxicological tests were performed with coastal and freshwater species employing different inorganic (metals) and organic (pesticides, hydrocarbons and domestic sewage) aquatic contaminants. A large group of biomarkers were analyzed in the biological samples obtained. Based on the results, some morphological, physiological, biochemical, genetic, and behavioral biomarkers were selected for the final experiments to be performed. Research groups involved in the INCT-TA are now performing these tests in laboratory using a freshwater (Prochilodus lineatus) and a coastal (Poecilia vivipara) fish species. The contaminants selected for these experiments were copper (metal), atrazine (pesticide), phenanthrene (hydrocarbon) and the domestic sewage from the Florianópolis city (SC, Southern Brazil).
